Broadband Preparedness Project
Here at the NADC, the Council and staff strategically engage with northern industry, communities and residents to assist in the creation of actionable strategies and recommendations for capitalizing on the North’s vast potential.
Among the many projects and priorities in focus, the NADC partnered with the Regional Development Branch of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade and the 5 northern Regional Economic Development Alliances to identify the current state of broadband within the NADC region. Access to broadband is critical to the development of any community. Internet access is no longer a luxury, but has become a necessity for business, education and personal use. The current broadband standard here in northern Alberta is directly impacting the potential for northern development, not to mention affecting northern residents, governments and businesses. The Northern Alberta Broadband Preparedness Project developed an inventory of the regional broadband system, including existing and planned broadband civil infrastructure, service footprints and service levels. The project came to completion in August 2017, and provides an assessment for the NADC region as a whole, as well as sub-region assessments for each northern Alberta REDA. The reports are available below.
In the spring of 2017, each northern Alberta REDA has hosted a seminar to present the final product in their region.
