This forum promotes vibrant communities by enabling northern leaders the opportunity to highlight regional issues and provide input on key priorities to the Government of Alberta; it is also a place for leaders to collaboratively develop strategies for addressing issues.
The region’s lack of an east-west transportation corridor hampers its economic growth. NADC commissioned a report that promoted the development of an east-west transportation corridor by focusing on the economic impacts associated with the investment.
Northern Alberta faces challenges health workforce attraction and retention and access to health services and specialist care. This initiative will ensure vibrant communities by identifying key issues associated with the delivery of health services in northern Alberta, and document specific recommendations for addressing these issues. The hosting of a Northern Health Summit was a deliverable from the 2014 Northern Leaders’ Summit.
This partnership with the northern colleges, formerly called Northern Labour Market Information Clearinghouse, addresses the need to facilitate northern workforce skills development by: facilitating information sharing; identifying workforce trends and conducting research to inform the modification or creation of new programs to address the skills gap through college programming.

This initiative highlights northern Alberta’s contribution to the overall economic health of Alberta and Canada by emphasizing northern Alberta’s economic performance.
The NADC provided support to the Grande Prairie & District Chamber of Commerce to conduct an Economic Impact and Gap Study of the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital. The regional hospital and cancer centre, located in the City of Grande Prairie, is expected to open in 2019, and will provide healthcare services to patients from across the province’s northwest. Its presence is also expected to create economic opportunities across the region with significant annual economic impacts to labour income, output, and tax revenues. Potential gaps in labour, accommodation, education and training, retail and food services, and non-emergency transportation were identified as well to inform discussions on how these could be addressed. The study is a proactive tool that provides local governments, businesses, and organizations with information and insights to be ready for the opening of the new regional hospital.
Recognizing northern Alberta’s strength in forestry is vital to maintaining innovation and investments. This initiative raises awareness of northern Alberta’s economic value in forestry industry by providing: an economic overview of the forestry sector and case studies illustrating northern Alberta’s progress in economic innovation and environmental sustainability.
The report "NADC Area Profile: An Economic Description of the Region" is now available online. It describes and provide statistical information on the demographic, economic composition and structure of the NADC region and its key economic sectors and how these contribute to the provincial economy. The profile also includes brief descriptions of development policies and economic factors that could impact the regional economy. Profiling a local economy is one of the key economic analysis tools for economic development planning. An area profile provides a fundamental description of a region’s economy which can be used as a starting point for other regional economic analyses. Statistical updates on topics covered in the report will be available as data sources are released and obtained in the future.
Northern Alberta’s climate is conducive for new flax seed strains that would be equal to or higher than northern canola. The goal of this research is to commercialize the product by 2018 and offers an opportunity to further diversify northern Alberta’s economy.
Northern Alberta businesses must adapt and develop innovative practices to ensure growth and diversity. This initiative fosters northern business competencies in order to sustain and propel northern business growth. It is an opportunity for northern business to share and learn innovative business practices that diversify the economy.
Broadband (the speed by which data is transmitted over the internet), is essential to supporting the potential for northern development and affecting northern residents, governments and businesses. Based on concerns that the current broadband standard in northern Alberta is not able to meet the growing demand, the NADC will partner with northern Alberta REDAs to undertake a study to identify the current state of broadband within the NADC region, its impacts and other priorities. The Grey Matters Conference is a two-day event that offers service providers opportunities to network, gain knowledge and increase awareness of issues, supports and services for seniors. 2016 was the first time this conference was held in northern Alberta.
Geographically referenced information about the region and its municipalities is limited in northern Alberta. The NADC has undertaken a project to provide a platform for NADC and municipal partners to use practical information to promote and develop local and regional joint projects. A web-based mapping platform for NADC and its municipal partners is proposed to be developed to support broader community engagement and sharing of data that is relevant to socio-economic development in northern Alberta.
